What is the Adizes Symbergetic™  Management (A’S/M) Methodology?

May 23, 2025

It is a tested, structured, and systemic  methodology for managing organizations. It consistently produces exceptional, sustainable results by  leading transformational change—without destructive conflict.

Unlike traditional consulting approaches that provide prescribe solutions, Adizes-Certified Organizational Symbergists™ (ACOS) guide organizations through a structured process of self-discovery. Through a carefully sequenced set of questions and facilitated discussions, the organization diagnoses itself and generates its own solutions. This therapeutic approach builds long-term, ongoing internal capacity for navigating change and solving complex challenges.

It is often described as organizational therapy—but unlike psychotherapy, which is phenomenological and individual-based, A’S/M is systematic and focused on the organizational whole. It treats organizations as living systems with internal dynamics that need diagnosis, healing, and reinforcement through structured processes.
Adizes helps:

  • Organizations of any size, culture, or industry to adapt and grow in the face of change
  • Manage change continuously, while maintaining internal harmony
  • Build a culture of mutual trust and respect (MT&R), which is essential for long-term sustainability
  • Identify and address root causes of systemic dysfunction—like poor structure, unhealthy culture, and leadership imbalance

What makes it different?

  • It’s not a quick fix or a one-time project—it creates the conditions for continuous self-renewal
  • It recognizes that conflict is natural, but destructive conflict is not
  • It aligns the structure, processes, and culture of an organization for sustainable performance
  • It integrates diverse leadership styles (PAEI) so that organizations function as healthy, complete systems

How does it work? The methodology follows an 11-phase implementation protocol, adjusted to the company’s position on the organizational lifecycle. Using proprietary diagnostic tools, the Adizes Institute determines an organization's normal, abnormal, and critical problems and traces their root causes. It then progresses through building a shared vision, aligning decision-making roles, reorganizing structures, and developing leadership teams.Examples of common applications:

  • Succession Planning: Transferring leadership from the founder to the next generation, often in family businesses.
  • Crisis Stabilization: Helping fast-growing companies regain control.
  • Revitalization: Reenergizing bureaucratic organizations suffering from stagnation.
  • Cultural Integration: Successful  merging of departments or companies.
  • Internal Conflict Resolution: Breaking through silo mentality and internal power struggles.
  • Governance Structuring: Clarifying roles and aligning decision-making power with responsibility.
  • Long-Term Strategic Alignment: Reaching clarity and consensus on purpose, values, and strategy.
  • Execution Excellence: Building a system where priorities are clear and implementation is accountable.
  • Designing organizational structures for effectiveness and efficient operation in the short and long run.
  • Increasing innovation
